St John's Island has been used as a quarantine station, prison and other governments facility centres since the late 19th century. The quarantine station was eventually also used to house victims of other diseases, such as leprosy. When mass immigration was closed in mid-20th century, the island was used to house a penal settlement and from 1955 a drug rehabilitation centre.
The island is also home to flora and fauna, and is popular for weekend visits. This is the biggest island located south of Singapore, which takes only 10-15 mintues boat ride from the Sentosa. Also located on the island is the Tropical Marine Science Institute, Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore's Marine Aquaculture Centre. A detention centre for illegal immigrants still remains.
Overnight stays are only allowed for occupants at the Holiday Bungalow and Holiday Camps.

Behind St John's Island, you will find Eagle Bay, a quiet sandy-beach nicely tuck away on Lazarus Island. As Singapore’s boating industry flourished since the late 90s, this beach has become a popular visit for boaters to drop their anchor to shelter for their weekend stopover.
Adjacent to Lazarus Island, you will find Kusu Island, also known as 'Tortoise Island' as story behind where a magical tortoise turned itself into an island to save two shipwrecked sailors, one a Malay and the other a Chinese. A popular Chinese temple, built by a wealthy businessman during 1923 and a wishing well which they believes have the power to confer prosperity, cure diseases, calm the sea and avert danger attracts a lot of visitors, especially during the certain festival during the year, reaching there by ocasional ferry trips from the nearby Marina South Pier.
Not far from St John's turning towards the east side, you will embark on Sister's Island.
Legends tells of a poor widow who had two pretty daughters, Minah and Linah, who were very close to each other. After their mother died, the sisters left the village to live with a distant uncle. One unfortunate day, Linah met a group of pirates while she was fetching water from a well near the sea. Frightened, she ran home while the pirate chief gave chase. At the uncle's home, the pirate brandished a dagger and made known his wish to marry Linah. That night, the two sisters wept bitterly in each other's arms. When dawn broke, the pirate chief and 16 of his men came to take Linah away. Clinging to each other, they were torn apart by the pirates and Linah was forced to leave with the pirates. Just then, the sky turned dark and a storm broke out. Desperate, Minah swam after the boat but drowned. On seeing this, Linah freed herself from her captors and jumped into the sea to join Minah.
The storm subsided but nowhere could the sisters be found. The next day, the villagers were shocked to see two islands at the spot where the two sisters had drowned.

Don't know how the story has evolved, but one thing we truly know as a fact, that the Singapore Marine Park has opened the first turtle hatchery on Sister's Island. Her location provided variety of habitats including coral reefs, sandy shores and seagrass areas that gives support to the ecosystem. This further enables the outreach, educational, protection, research and activities related to the native marine biodiversity. Ensure you do not bring out any fishing gear when you are cruising around here.
