Asia Superyacht in numbers
Regional Split
Albeit Asia superyacht population has been steadily growing since 2006, there are still less than 200 true superyachts across all of Asia. As a matter of fact, for the period 2016-2017, 30% of superyachts in Asia where superyachts visiting from other parts of the world. If we take out Asia-based superyachts currently out of the region and cruising around, the Asia-based Superyachts population can be split as per the following sub-regional graph (source: Asia Superyacht Development -ASD-, Yacht Style Magazine).
Non-Asia based visiting Superyachts are for the large majority of them yachts above 140 feet. Typically, such yachts have a great cruising range, real ocean cruising capabilities and altogether a crew equipped to undertake long haul passages.
Such yachts are essential additions to the technical support industry spreading across Asia which relies on a growing number of visiting yachts to justify further investment in infrastructure, skills and 'content' development.
15 years ago, Hong Kong and Taiwan were the leading Superyacht markets in Asia. of late, South East Asia has taken the lead thanks to a combination of development of Superyacht adapted marinas, sustained economic growth and in some case supportive or understanding authorities. Though there is still some to be done in terms of regulations and infrastructure both Singapore and more significantly Phuket are currently taking the lead as Asia Superyacht hubs.

Asia-based Superyachts currently out of Asia
Asia-based Superyachts currently out of the region are more often than not cruising in the Mediterranean Sea. They currently make up a total of 2,389 feet for an average size of 217 feet per yacht. Yes, big yachts! This also implies that about 50% of Asia-based Superyachts over 200 feet are currently not in Asia, which also a very significant figure. In Europe for one or two seasons, sometimes more, Asian owners really and truly enjoy their yachts!
