Of superyachts and other "useless" but all too necessary toys...
Her reflection is slightly troubled by that shimmer of breeze that cools this perfect Mediterranean mid-afternoon, she sits safe at her mooring. It is June and the weather perfect. Perfectly fine. Walking down the gangway leading to the floating pontoon, a crew prepares himself to welcome the owner’s guests. He will wait there, standstill, patiently, his perfectly white uniform beaming in the warming light. His captain’s hat betrays his importance. He doesn’t smile yet. He knows how important this is. Everything has to be immaculate, discreetly and outlandishly at the same time, if ever that was possible. Aboard, stewards and stewardesses are accurately going through the last preparations. Tonight, she, “M.Y Carostefal”, will set sail for a couple of days with the Owner and guests.
“Carostefal”, is the largest yacht in the marina where she lays. This is Monaco, a gaming and tax-haven She is impressive. Built by a prestigious Italian class, she speaks of class and opulence. She is owned by a Prince… And there is none like her there.
If you have ever seen a superyacht cruising by, or anchored off your favorite spot in the French Riviera or the Bahamas, your imagination is already spinning with superlatives. Anxiously and out of sheer curiosity you may already be searching over the net for the list of the largest superyachts in the world, entering that fantastic universe of, well, excesses and indulgence. If she is so extraordinary, how long, how big could “Carostefal” be then? 120 meters? 150 meters? 180 meters? More?
Oddly enough, you will not find her name in even the most updated lists. Not because she is shrouded in a cloud of secrecy with there is an army of security agents making sure no information whatsoever is leaked about her or because she has just been launched. None of these. The reason why she will not appear in the lists is simple. we are looking at a 1972 black and white picture of the marina of Monaco. And ”M.Y Carostefal” is only 22 meters long. This is the Spirit of Yachting, and the real beginning of Superyachting. Welcome to a brand New World. Make it YOURS.
